In 1916, with financial assistance from Thomas Ryan, he created the Auto-Ordonance Corporation in order to put into practice his vision of modern arms. The Model M1921, known as the "Tommy Gun," was succeeded by the models of 1923 and 1927. After conducting its own tests, the US Navy asked that the rate of fire be reduced to 700 rounds per minute and that the vertical foregrip be eliminated. This version was designated the Model 1928.
